Supports the natural wound healing

Why do so many midwives recommend Livella Silver Nursing Cups?

External influences can slow down the natural wound healing process of the damaged skin around the nipple. The anatomical shape of Livella Silver Nursing Cups provides ideal cover and protection for sore nipples and allows a small amount of breast milk to accumulate around the nipple which favours moist wound healing. Thanks to this, breastfeeding will soon again be an all-around pleasant experience and you will be able to enjoy a loving nursing period with your baby.

Optimal protection for sore and sensitive nipples

Why use Livella Silver Nursing Cups?

    1. 1. Their anatomical shape and lightweight allow a comfortable fit around the nipple where you hardly feel them.
    2. 2. They protect the nipples from drying out, chafing against or sticking to the fabrics of your clothes and prevent twisting or bending of already sore nipples.
    3. 3. The moist environment created by the breast milk which gathers around the nipple favours the healing process of the skin.

Natural breastfeeding without nipple ointments

Why is it important to avoid ointments and creams?

The glands sitting around the nipples produce a special secretion that stimulates the baby’s natural rooting reflex. Its scent resembles the scent of amniotic fluid and helps the baby find the mother’s nipples and latch on properly. Ointments and similar products can alter the characteristic scent of this fluid. And even after thorough cleaning, these creams may leave a residue on the skin around the nipple which your baby could consume during the breastfeeding session. When using Livella Silver Nursing Cups, you can breastfeed your baby anytime without having to clean your nipples first. The natural scent of your breast remains the same.

How to use your Livella Silver Nursing Cups

Wash your nipples with lukewarm water before each feeding session to remove any traces of dried breast milk.

After the breastfeeding session, place the silver nursing cups directly over your nipples. You can accelerate the healing process by putting a few drops of breast milk into each cup.

Accordion Content

It is not necessary nor recommended to use additional care products on your nipples.

The silver nursing cups can be worn without a problem in combination with a nursing bra or nursing pads. For optimal results, we recommend that you wear your nursing cups all day long, only taking them off when you need to feed your baby.

Continue wearing the cups after your nipples have healed to prevent any new skin damage.

We recommend rinsing the silver nursing cups under warm waterafter each application. Once in a while, they can also be cleaned with a mixture of sodium bicarbonate and water.

The size of the Silver Nursing Cups is suitable for all breast and nipple sizes. It is important that the affected (sore) area and the nipples are covered. We chose the size for our nursing cups (diameter 4.5 cm and height 1.2 cm) based on international studies and the experience of previous Livella Silver Nursing Cups users.

We generally recommend removing dried breast milk from the nipples before breastfeeding. However, additional washing before using the nursing cups is not necessary since they are made of fine silver following the highest purity standards. The product will therefore not leave any residue on the nipple.

The nursing cups are perfectly adapted to the size of the nipple, which guarantees a comfortable fit (diameter 4.5cm and height 1.2cm). However, they are not made for collecting excess milk. We recommend that you put nursing pads in your bra to absorb additional breast milk.

The Silver Nursing Cups are designed to shield the nipples and support the natural wound healing process. They protect the nipples from drying out and chafing against your clothes and also prevent them from being bent or twisted. However, they do not have any holes which would make them fit for use during breastfeeding.

The material we use is 100% pure 999 silver. Silver is a natural product and can tarnish after a while if it is not stored and cleaned properly. This is a natural process that has no influence on the efficacy of the product, but rather proves the high purity of the material. Nevertheless, the discolouration can be counteracted and the aesthetics of the product can be preserved by following our care and storage instructions.

Before applying your Silver Nursing Cups for the first time, you should clean them under warm running waterusing a mild soap. It is also possible to clean the cups by boiling them for 20 minutes. Important: Allow the Silver Nursing Cups to cool before applying to avoid burns.
We also recommend rinsing the silver cups thoroughly with lukewarm water between applications, again using a mild soap, before drying them with a clean tea towel. Regular rinsing prevents discolouration.

The Silver Nursing Cups can be boiled in water for up to 20 minutes without any problems. However, the cups should be boiled separately to avoid scratches caused by collisions. Depending on the lime content of the water, you might notice a thin white film on the silver after boiling which can easily be wiped off with a soft cloth and clear water.

The Silver Nursing Cups can also be cleaned with wound disinfectant, but they should be rinsed thoroughly afterwards so that there are no residues of the disinfectant left on the cups which would later be consumed by the newborn.

The Livella Silver Nursing Cups are 100% made of 999 silver, also known as solid silver, and thus have the highest possible purity grade. We do NOT use copper or another metal as a substitute. We have developed a special manufacturing process that allows us to completely avoid the use of other metals. We are the only manufacturers in Europe using this process and the silver we use as a raw material is produced in Germany and certified by the German TÜV .

The solid 999 silver used for the Silver Nursing Cups is a sustainable, high-quality material. With the right care, the cups can be used throughout the entire nursing period. After a while, you might notice a natural discolourationof the silver. However, tarnishing does not diminish the natural healing properties of the material.

The Silver Nursing Cups have an anatomical shape that is perfectly adapted to the breast. With a height of 1.2 cm and a weight of 5 grams per cup, they are hardly noticeable under a nursing bra.

The Silver Nursing Cups can be used on flat and inverted nipples as well as on normal nipples of all sizes. They protect the nipple as well as the surrounding areola from unpleasant chafing or sticking to clothing.

In case of an existing fungal, viral or bacterial infection, you should consult with a doctor first before starting to use the Silver Nursing Cups.

We generally recommend that you wear the Silver Nursing Cups throughout the entire nursing period and only remove them before each feeding session. As soon as breastfeeding has turned into a routine for you and your baby and the pain is gone, it is usually not necessary to use them any longer. Should the pain return, you can easily go back to using the Silver Nursing Cups.

If wearing the Silver Nursing Cups becomes uncomfortable, you can try the following:

  1. 1. Try to reduce external pressure on the breast and nipple (e.g. by wearing a nursing bra).
  2. 2. Wear the Silver Nursing Cups together with a nursing pad.
  3. 3. Wear them for shorter intervals and take breaks between applications.

No, the Silver Nursing Cups do not shape the nipples. They are placed over the nipples before and after breastfeeding to shield them from chafing against clothes and other objects. Leaving a few drops of breast milk in each cup can promote moist wound healing.

The silver cups are no cause of breast engorgement.

Breast engorgement or blocked milk ducts can have several causes. A common reason is that the milk ducts are not emptied properly during breastfeeding. The production of new breast milk can hence cause congestion which prevents the milk from flowing properly. The affected areas then become hard and painful. Placing the Silver Nursing Cups on the affected area will make their application uncomfortable. Therefore, the congestion should first be cleared. External factors such as too much stress or wearing a bra that is too tight can also lead to milk congestion in the breast.

A fungal infection is caused by bacteria from the baby’s mouth. Infections usually only develop when the mother’s immune system is already weakened. Fungal infections cannot be caused by the Silver Nursing Cups. You should discuss treatment with your doctor or midwife.

Moist wound healing is recommended by many doctors. Studies show that the wound can heal up to 50% faster and better this way.* Furthermore, breast milk has special healing properties that have an additional positive effect on wound healing.

The Silver Nursing Cups can also be stored in the fridge when you are not wearing them. This allows for a pleasant cooling effect. However, they should not be put in the freezer as applying them frozen may result in your skin suffering from ice burn.

The Silver Nursing cups can deform under external pressure. To return them to their original shape, simply apply punctual pressure on them with your fingers. Even if a slight deformation remains, it will not affect their functionality.

The cups should cover the irritated and sore areas in order to protect them from external influences (like chafing or sticking to clothing) and to allow small amounts of breast milk to accumulate around the sore skin which promotes moist wound healing.

The purity of the 999 silver used for our Livella Silver Nursing Cups is tested and accredited by independent testing laboratories (e.g. TÜV SÜD Germany). We source the material from a German supplier. You can find the relevant certificate in the product image gallery. A common misconception is that “real” silver must be stamped with its purity grade (e.g. 825, 925, or 999). There is no stamp requirement in Europe. Only test certificates confirm the real purity of the silver as stamps can be put on the material without previous quality control.

A common misconception is that “real” silver must be stamped with its purity grade (e.g. 800, 835, 925, or 999). There is no stamp requirement in Europe. Only test certificates confirm the real purity of the silver as stamps can be put on the material arbitrarily. We do not use a stamp because we do not want to damage the surface of the Silver Nursing Cups. This way, we prevent possible deformation which may result in unpleasant friction on already sensitive skin and which may lead to the cups getting caught on clothes.

The number indicates the purity of the material, i.e. what percentage of silver it contains. For example, 999 silver refers to the highest purity grade possible and indicates that it contains 99.9% silver. The different silver grades are 925, 835, and 800, plus simple silver plating. In the case of 835 silver, the material only contains 83.5% silver. The remaining components (16.5%) are other metals such as copper, iron, zinc, etc. In the process of silver plating, another metal (mostly copper) is coated with an extremely thin layer of silver, which means it has no purity at all.

The Livella Silver Nursing Cups are produced in a manufactory in Schleswig-Holstein (Germany) under the highest quality standards. Each cup is carefully checked before dispatch, following the four-eyes principle, and only leaves our production if it meets all the requirements.
